Why Bwindi is Special
Bwindi’s biggest highlight is the chance to see mountain gorillas in the wild. Treks are guided and carefully regulated, making them one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in East Africa. The park’s ancient forest also supports many other primates, butterflies and birds, making it ideal for photographers, nature lovers and specialist travelers.
Gorilla Families & Trekking Experience
Visitors to Bwindi can trek different habituated gorilla families depending on the booked sector. Trekking starts with a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority guides, followed by a guided walk through the forest. Trek length depends on where the gorillas are that day, but once found, visitors are allowed one hour with the family. For travelers who want a deeper experience, the gorilla habituation experience provides longer contact time with a semi-habituated group.
Birds, Nature and Community Experiences
Bwindi is also one of Uganda’s top birding parks, hosting Albertine Rift endemics and many forest species. Nature walks, community tours and cultural visits around Batwa and Bakiga communities can be added to enrich the trip. This makes Bwindi more than a one-hour gorilla encounter — it becomes a complete forest and culture destination.
When to Visit
Bwindi is open all year, but the drier months from June to September and December to February are usually preferred for trekking because the trails are easier to manage. Even during wetter months, gorilla trekking continues, and the forest is lush and dramatic.

Accommodation ranges from budget camps and guesthouses to midrange lodges and high-end safari lodges. The best lodge choice usually depends on your permit sector, access road and how you plan to combine Bwindi with other destinations.
Getting There
Bwindi is usually reached by road from Kampala or Entebbe in a 4x4 vehicle. Some travelers also access it from Kigali, especially for the southern sectors. Because the roads can be hilly and rough, we strongly recommend a reliable Prado, Safari Land Cruiser or similar 4x4.
